The Runt

I rescued three small kittens from the farm hoping to give them “a better life”.  What was I thinking!  After three weeks of care, they have grown but at different rates.  One of them appears to be a runt.  The bigger one weighs in at a whopping 1.5 lbs. and the runt is only .5 lbs of fluff.

What happened?  Well, the bigger one started eating solid food right away, but the runt will only drink milk–and might I add she will only drink milk from a tiny little bottle!  Does the same happen to us in the spiritual sense when we only drink spiritual “milk”?

1 Corinthians 3:2 tells us, “I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready.”  And according to 1 Peter 2:2 milk is a necessary part of our growth, “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.”  But we are advised not to stay in that place.  “But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” Heb. 5:14

At some point we need to graduate from milk to solid food.  Granted some of us aren’t as quick to do that as others–we kind of like that milk.  But if we remain in that state are we in danger of not growing up?
Let’s resolve not to be spiritual “runts” and ask the Lord to prepare us to feast on solid food!
